Upmix 7.1

Fill the room.

Upmix 7.1 is an effect you insert on a track in your DAW. Feed it any stereo or mono sound and, as it plays, it spreads it over the eight channels of a 7.1 system: front left and right, a centre, side and rear surrounds, and the LFE. It reads how wide the material is moment to moment, so the centre, surrounds and sub follow the sound.

How it works

What happens to your stereo sound on its way to eight speakers.

  1. Stereo or mono inAny sound on a track with stereo or mono input
  2. CentreWhat both speakers share moves to the centre, by how alike the two sides are at that moment
  3. SurroundsThe left–right difference plus a decorrelated copy, sides 15 ms late, rears 30 ms
  4. Clean low endSurrounds high-passed at 120 Hz, the LFE gets everything below 100 Hz
  5. LimiterOne look-ahead limiter linked across all eight channels, so the image never shifts
  6. 7.1 or 5.1 outIn WAV / FFmpeg order: L R C LFE Lb Rb Ls Rs

What it does

The more both speakers share, the more goes to the centre; the more they differ, the more fills the surrounds.

The surrounds never get the dry centre: they get delayed, decorrelated ambience, so the field opens up without the sound jumping behind you.

Setting it up

Put Upmix 7.1 on a track with a stereo or mono input and a 7.1 output (8 channels). 5.1 (6 outputs) works too: the sides and rears share the surrounds.

On a stereo output, it always plays the headphone preview, for checking only.

Checking the field

Solo speakers: click a speaker in the sound field to solo or unsolo it; Shift+click solos only that one.

Headphone preview: no 7.1 speakers? Turn it on to hear each speaker where it stands, 2 m from you, on headphones. Clear the solos and turn the preview off before you render.
